As I wonder why politics refuse to let us go

Though I prefer to dissociate politics from homosexual activism, I can’t help but wonder why is it that politics refuse to let us go. Why can’t they possibly live their way and let us live our way? But I don’t complain, I just giggle every time I watch something like this:

Nothing new, the good old fashion we don’t have that kind of stuff in our country. It reminds me of my mom’s reaction when I first told her that I have gay and lesbian friends, her first reaction was:these people exist here?I wouldn’t blame my sheltered mother for not knowing better, but this pattern irritates me, and over time it actually becomes funny! We are not really who we say we are, we don’t really know what we are. In fact we have a defect! When they can’t find any psychological or scientific proof of our defect they boldly accuse the others. If we are as straight as they need us to be, then it’s because we watch too much television, too much western movies where women are immoral and promiscuous and engage in lesbian acts to excite men, possess a man’s power or just because they are immoral westerners! However, and just to make sure that I am not misunderstood, I must say that this is not an angry entry, this is not an entry where I deplore our situation. I am proud to be a “not straight enough” woman in Lebanon, proud and happy, happy and amused. Amused to see how some self-centered cultures opt to such extreme levels of denial to deny what is obvious:

Yes Mr president there are homosexuals in Iran! They are in Lebanon and in every country in the middle east and in every country in this whole world.

I am amused by such a speech just as those people attending that conference were amused, and if you look closer, you’d notice that even when he was saying it, the president himself was smiling as if he was just saying what he said to intentionally avoid that question, for his statement defies any logic. It’s impossible that he could ignore the presence of homosexuals in Iran. The execution f those poor teenage boys a little more than a year ago, couldn’t have passed unnoticed. And in the end, I fear that the only ones
who aren’t amused by such statements are the homosexuals who actually live in Iran… Their lives are under the mercy of politicians with a twisted sense of humor.
